Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922) is a silent German Expressionist masterpiece directed by F.W. Murnau and one of the earliest and most influential vampire films. Loosely based on Bram Stoker's Dracula, the film follows Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim), who travels to the remote Carpathian Mountains to meet Count Orlok (Max Schreck), a mysterious and grotesque recluse interested in purchasing property near Hutter’s hometown. Hutter soon discovers that Orlok is a vampire, spreading terror and death wherever he goes. Orlok's journey to Hutter's town brings a wave of plague-like horror, and it falls to Hutter’s wife, Ellen (Greta Schröder), to make a sacrificial stand against the sinister Count. Renowned for its eerie atmosphere, striking visuals, and Schreck’s chilling portrayal of the titular vampire, Nosferatu is celebrated as a cornerstone of horror cinema and a defining work of German Expressionism. Its haunting imagery continues to influence the genre to this day.
